Poetry is good for the brain-– so my childhood of my mom quoting Longfellow, Shakespeare et al, and my dad’s Brer Nancy stories, Ms. Murphy’s My Last Duchess and Chaucer, and my mentor Chi Ogunyemi’s Shange/Baraka indoctrinationation combined with my pre/adolescence of memorizing Salt N Pepa, Madonna, Rakim and TLC really helped!

IF LITERATURE is food for the mind, then a poem is a banquet, according to research by Scottish scientists which shows poetry is better for the brain than prose. Psychologists at Dundee and St Andrews universities claim the work of poets such as Lord Byron.
