"On a deeper dive I was electrified to learn about and “meet” Abdullah, the Ethiopian man who was Neville’s mentor and spiritual teacher.
“He was as black as the ace of spades, my old friend Abdullah, with his turbaned head,” writes Neville. Yet by all accounts Abdullah lived life on his own terms during the age of segregation in the United States.
Charismatic spiritual teacher Abdullah was known for his bold teaching methods and his ability to convey complex metaphysical concepts in simple, easily workable terms. For example, Abdullah belched to approximate and teach the correct sound in Hebrew of the name of God. Abdullah was also a master of esoteric knowledge with psychic abilities. He taught Christian principles with a deep understanding of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and the Kabbalah, and incorporated these teachings into his own spiritual philosophy. Strict with his students, Abdullah demanded devotion, discipline, and dedication.
Take it from Neville: “When I first met my friend Abdullah back in 1931, I entered a room where he was speaking and when the speech was ended, he came over, extended his hand and said: ‘Neville, you are six months late.’ I had never seen the man before, so I said: ‘I am six months late? How do you know me?’ and he replied: ‘The Brothers told me that you were coming, and you are six months late.’” The Brothers refer to Elohim, the Divine, God, or gods.
Abdullah was most likely born in the 1840s, and he lived to be over 100 years old. According to his secretary, he returned to Ethiopia to die in 1957, having lived in Oxford and New York City, among other places. Prolific author Joseph Murphy believed him to be from Israel, so perhaps he was able to visit that region too. Abdullah lived at the prestigious Morgenthau mansion at 30 West 72nd Street, off Central Park West in Manhattan, just crosstown from where I attended middle school and high school on East 83rd Street.
Abdullah’s known students included New Thought leaders Neville Goddard (known simply as Neville), Dr. Joseph Murphy, Winifred MacCardell Flood, and possibly John McDonald and Walter C. Lanyon. Neville said that Abdullah counseled luminaries: “Scientists, doctors, lawyers, bankers, from every walk of life [sought] an audience with old Abdullah, and everyone who came thought themselves honored to be admitted to his home and to receive an interview. If he was ever invited out, and he was, he was always the honored guest.” Rabbis would also come to study with him. Abdullah’s building was known for its spiritual empowerment classes. Neville also told friends and acquaintances like Freedom Barry, Lindell Warden, Margaret Ruth Broome, and Israel Regardie about his experience with the “brilliant, wonderful gentleman” Abdullah, called an “eccentric” and “giant Ethiopian rabbi” by Regardie.
Yet there are those today who doubt that Abdullah existed. It’s not easy for some people to picture a Black man in Jim Crow America commanding life as Abdullah did. I will not be investigating Abdullah’s realness here or trying to prove he existed—because he did. To be honest with you, I find the mental gymnastics people have gone through on this topic extremely offensive. One author even courageously confessed, “I had difficulty believing Abdullah was real at first because he seemed so ‘white’ to me, but that’s how ignorant of history I was.”
Perhaps it’s because my own father is a cranky, old, wise Black professor, clergyman, and spiritual teacher from another country that I don’t get the vibe of imaginary, mysterious guru or “magical negro” from descriptions of Abdullah. I feel him as a knowledgeable, sage, practical, life-changing practitioner. Maybe it’s because I come from cultures that prize oral literature, but I feel that I have known several Abdullahs in my life."

"About 10 years or so ago, I decided to hermitize myself in my parents’ home for a few weeks to heal after a particularly horrific breakup. Every morning I went out on their porch to journal and would say hello to Steve, the mail carrier. I don’t recall how the conversations on manifesting started, but my mother’s mailman started to tell me about Neville Goddard. Tell is the wrong word. Steve started to implore and insist urgently that I read Neville.
Around the same time, my mentor in my head, Dr. Wayne Dyer, started singing the gospel of Neville and published Wishes Fulfilled based on his teachings. I listened to Dr. Dyer Mondays at 4 p.m. EST on Hay House Radio. At that time I was teaching The Secret and affirmations and was already a student of Florence Scovel Shinn and Abraham Hicks. After college I was blessed to intern at CNBC’s self-help talk show Alive and Wellness, which featured Louise Hay’s work, and rode the subway reading Iyanla Vanzant’s first book. So I thought I knew all I needed to know and assumed that all of the “New Thought” leaders of Shinn’s era were saying the same thing.
Growing up, my dad had quite the library of spiritual books and a subscription to an “odd” esoteric publication called the Rosicrucian Digest, which had a children’s section. My sister and I were making vision boards as kids, although we didn’t call them that. So none of this was strange to me. I just assumed I had all the information."
