Being a black woman right now is… interesting.

Let’s talk about it.

I’m sure that being in your beautiful skin — whatever it looks like — is interesting too.

“WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A BLACK WOMAN RIGHT NOW?”

…she asked as I took in the Summer sun.

It’s as terrifyingly beautiful as it always is, I replied.

I’m a survivor, born of survivors, trying to learn how to THRIVE instead when people who look like me are harassed and murdered for simply looking like me, when families are being pulled apart in a story as old as America.

When I was growing up in the 80s, folks used to say, “All you gotta do is stay black and die.”

I respectfully disagree.

All I gotta do is stay black and LIVE.

As for the very real FEAR I feel about so many things on a daily basis, as Great Auntie Audre Lorde once said, “When I dare to be POWERFUL, to use my strength in the SERVICE of my VISION, then it becomes less and less important whether I am AFRAID.”
